Super Bowl Gospel Celebration: What You Need to Know About This Year's Big Event
In its 18th year, the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is back with a new city and some of the best performers in the Christian music industry to commemorate one of the largest sporting events of the year -- Super Bowl LI.
If you don't have a ticket to the biggest Christian concert during Super Bowl weekend, The Christian Post has you covered with all you need to know about the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration.
The Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is the only NFL sanctioned gospel music.
Melanie Few-Harrison, the daughter of a minister who is passionate about gospel music explained her reason for creating the event that kicked off in 1999.
"We founded this event to bring even more inspiration and celebration to one of the biggest events of the year – the Super Bowl," Few-Harrison, the creator and executive producer of Super Bowl Gospel Celebration, said in a My Houston Gospel report. "Each year we aim to touch lives in a meaningful way and make the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration bigger than the last with artists and special guests."
This year's SBGC is filled with famous faces that include event hosts comedian David Mann and his singer wife Tamela Mann ("Mann and Wife"). Aside from this year's hosts, the SBGC is welcoming a diverse array of performers from rapper Lecrae, veteran singers Cece Winans, Natalie Grant, Yolanda Adams, Myron Butler, crooner Anthony Hamilton, fresh faced teenage songstress Jekalyn Carr, saxophonist Mike Phillips and the band from Prairie View A&M known as the Marching Storm.
Natalie Grant let fans know just how excited she was to participate in the events.
"So excited to perform at @superbowlgospelcelebration tomorrow night, the only NFL-sanctioned gospel event. Join me, Lecrae, CeCe Winans, Yolanda Adams and many more at Lakewood Church," she wrote on social media. "Jesus and football. I'm a happy girl."
The 18th annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration is taking place at megachurch Pastor Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The church that seats over 16,000 people was selected by the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee ahead of Super Bowl LI.
Jackelyn IIoff, the senior advisor for Joel Osteen Ministries, explained why the church hosting the event was a great opportunity.
"We think it's a great opportunity to host the diversity of Christian music. It's natural for us to celebrate this way," she said in a Houston Chronicle report. "We have such an outstanding facility in terms of broadcast capabilities. We do international broadcasts on television and online every week, so it was just a real easy fit."
If you missed the opportunity to witness the SBGC in person, BET Networks will air the events before and after Super Bowl LI Sunday, February 5 at 11 a.m. ET. For more information, please visit BET's Super Bowl Gospel Celebration page.
