'Super Mario Run' Android Version Launches Today
As Nintendo recently announced, "Super Mario Run" will launch for Android platforms this week.
The mobile game was first released in mid-December 2016 for iOS devices such as the iPhone and the iPad. The game has been downloaded 78 million times and has brought in around $53 million in revenue for Nintendo. Later on, the Japanese company revealed that the game would be available on the Google Play Store for Android users sometime in March.
On Saturday, March 18, Nintendo finally announced the official release date of the mobile game's Android version via their official Twitter account. It was also revealed that interested Android users can already pre-register for the game in the Google Play Store.
Those who pre-register for "Super Mario Run" on the Android platform ahead of its Wednesday release will be able to download the game for free once it is available. However, they can only play a trial mode of its first few levels before they are prompted to unlock the full game version for $9.99.
Aside from the impending release of its Android version, "Super Mario Run" will also receive an update to its iOS version, which adds new characters to the game. However, Nintendo has yet to divulge which specific characters from the "Mario" universe will be introduced in the mobile game.
Currently, "Super Mario Run" features several characters such as Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Toad, Toadette and the titular hero himself, Mario. Since the existing characters are mostly good guys from "Super Mario," Nintendo might start incorporating antagonists to the mobile game such as Wario, Waluigi or the Koopalings, according to GameRant.
In addition to the iOS Version 2.0.0 update, the game will also feature a change in which World 1–4 will get unlocked after completing one of Bowser's challenges in the game's free version. This means gamers who haven't purchased the full game yet have more additional levels to enjoy.
"Super Mario Run" is currently available for iOS devices, and will be released for Android on March 23.
