'Supergirl' Series News: Melissa Benoist and Brandon Routh's Photo at CW Upfronts Re-ignites Clamor for a Superman Crossover to the Show

Will Superman finally grace an episode in Melissa Benoist's "Supergirl" now that the latter has moved to CW? This is the question asked by many fans of the Kryptonian characters after Benoist and one-time Superman in the movies, Brandon Routh, posed for posterity in the recently held CW Upfronts.

Before Henry Cavill became identified as this generation's Man of Steel, it was first Routh who suited up as Superman in 2006 via the so-so accepted "Superman Returns." A decade after suiting up as the superhero, there are still those who remember him for the role, fueling hopes that he can reprise the DC superhero character for, at least, a guest appearance of CW's transferee show, "Supergirl."

With the transfer of "Supergirl" to CW, it is now easier for DC characters from other superhero shows on the network to cross over and for Benoist's Girl of Steel to fly from one show to another. Currently, the network plays home to "Arrow," "The Flash," and "Legends of Tomorrow."

However, there seems to be a problem. If fans want Superman to appear on "Supergirl" even just for a cameo, it seems that Routh is not the right actor to don the suit. Currently, the actor plays the role of Ray Palmer on "Legends of Tomorrow," otherwise known as Atom, a superhero character who can shrink in size.

This is not the first time that fans have expressed their desire to see Superman on "Supergirl." Earlier this year, when the show was still with CBS, Tom Welling, who played the role of a young Clark Kent during his pre-Superman days via the hit series "Smallville," was asked if he was willing to finally don the Man of Steel's tights for a guest appearance on the show. The actor responded that the show would need to give him advanced notice on that should they want him to do so.

However, while it remains uncertain if a Superman character would, indeed, be seen on the second season of "Supergirl," there are speculations that Superboy might just be included in the series. Basing on the final episode of the show on CBS, the series ended with a cliffhanger featuring a Kryptonian pod many believed to be related to Project Cadmus, a genetic engineering project that gave birth to Connor Kent, otherwise known as Superboy.
