'Supergirl' spoilers; Melissa Benoist to play lead
There is a new superhero flying into the TV screens of fans across the world. It's not a bird, it's not a plane, it's not Superman — it's "Supergirl." The new CBS show focuses on Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman.
Playing the titular character is former Glee star Melissa Benoist in her first major starring role on television. Joining her on the upcoming show are Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as James Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, David Harwood as Hank Henshaw, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, and Peter Facinelli as Maxwell Lord. Actor Dean Cain and actress Helen Slater are also part of the cast playing Kara's adoptive parents.
The show takes place in National City where Kara lives. Kara has a day job working as an assistant to Cat Grant, while she moonlights as a crime-fighting superhero. The series will focus on Kara's journey to becoming a hero as she has spent almost all her life hiding her powers from everyone, especially her adoptive family, the Danvers, who took her in when she was only 12 years old.
Actor Chris Browning, former star of the hit series "Sons of Anarchy," has recently been tapped to play Ben Krull, also known as Reactron. He is a villain from the DC comics who wants to take revenge on Superman by targeting his cousin. The villain will appear on the third episode of the series and will most likely become a recurring character.
Other villains are going to appear, as well. Actress Brit Morgan from "True Blood" will play Livewire, a shock-jock from the comics, while actor Justice Leak will play Hellgrammite, a bug like villain.
Another character that will show up on the show is Lucy Lane, the younger sister of Lois Lane, who happens to be the ex-girlfriend of James Olsen. She will be played by Jenna Dewan Tatum. Levi Miller, star of the movie "Pan" has been tapped to play Carter Grant, the son of Cat Grant (Calista Flockheart).
Melissa Benoist was shown wearing the signature costume in a couple of behind-the-scenes photos during a taping, while lifting up an ambulance. The actress is truly excited to don the iconic costume as comic book fans around the world are excited to see the famous character come to life on the small screen.
Supergirl will premiere this Oct. 26 on CBS.
