Susan Sarandon Joins Cast of Showtime's 'The Big C'

Susan Sarandon has agreed to portray a cancer survivor on several episodes of Showtime's hit series "The Big C."

Starring Laura Linney, the dark comedy tells the story of Cathy, a suburban mother who deals with a cancer diagnosis with humor.

Oscar-winning Sarandon, 65, will play the role of Joy. Her character befriends Cathy through a bond over their similar backgrounds with the disease.

"She's another cancer survivor who has used her cancer experience in a unique way trying to inspire other people," said the show's creator, Darlene Hunt, to The Hollywood Reporter. "She makes Cathy question whether she's doing enough with her own cancer experience."

Fans of the show have taken to Twitter over the news about season three.

In response to Sarandon's addition to the cast of "The Big C," Twitter user Sho posted, "Pretty great!"

"I've just realized that Susan Sarandon gueststarred (sic) in both of my favorite shows of all time," wrote Gwenn.

In 1995, Sarandon won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Dead Man Walking." The actress has also appeared on "30 Rock," "Rescue Me," and "ER" as a guest star. Her guest appearances on "Friends" and "Malcolm in the Middle" earned Sarandon two Emmy Award nominations.

The New York City native is well known for her social and political activism for several causes.

Sarandon will join actor Victor Garber as season three's guest stars. The season will see Garber's character create trouble for Cathy's bipolar brother Sean, played by John Benjamin Hickey.

"The Big C" drew the largest audience for a Showtime original series premiere in eight years when it premiered in 2010. The Emmy-nominated series has earned Linney a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress as well as many other awards.

Season three of the series is scheduled to premiere on Sunday, April 8 at 9:30 EST on Showtime.
