'Switched At Birth' Season 5 Spoilers: Series Creator Lizzy Weiss Explains 10-Month Jump, Teases Kathryn-Craig Affair
The upcoming fifth season of "Switched at Birth" could see Kathryn Kennish (Lea Thompson) and her husband John (D.W. Moffett) separating or getting a divorce.
In the final episode of Season 4, Craig (Samuel Page), a former colleague of Kathryn's, was back. Did his return drive Kathryn to reconsider her marriage and her and John's marital problems? Did it lead her to think that she deserves more than what John can give her? Are the two getting divorced?
Could Kathryn and John's divorce be the shocking news that Bay (Vanessa Marano) received in the Season 4 finale? Could it be the event that brings her and Daphne (Katie Leclerc) home?

"Switched at Birth" boss Lizzy Weiss talked to TV Line after Season 4 ended to talk about the events that transpired on the show. She also revealed some telling details about Season 5. About Craig's return and how it will affect Kathryn, Weiss said, "Kathryn has really been very supportive, and we just felt like she needed a freakout, too." She added:
"She was owed a freakout about losing the carwash and having money problems and becoming a grandmother so soon. We thought it would be fun to see her panic. In everybody's marriage, there are bumps … and hopefully you push past them. Craig was just a fun way to get her into a fancy dress and to enjoy a nice moment, instead of being so stand-by-your-man."
Whether Craig's purpose is limited to just one nice moment or several will be known in Season 5.
The "Switched at Birth" executive producer also opened up about the 10-month time jump that will take place between Seasons 4 and 5, saying that she and the rest of the team behind the show wanted to create a cliffhanger so that if the show was renewed, they would have a jump-off point for the story. She also told TV Line that jumping the story forward a bit and taking the characters into their futures just "felt natural."
The official release date for the fifth season of "Switched at Birth" has not been announced, though fans can expect the show's return in 2016. ABC Family, which by then will be known as Freeform, announced that the show had been renewed for a fifth season in October 2015.
