Switchfoot to Kick Off Third Annual Bro-Am Charity

Christian crossover band Switchfoot is gearing up for its third annual Bro-Am, an event which combines surfing and music to help out charity.

The event, which will be held at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Calif., on Saturday, is expected to draw in thousands and raise money for Care House, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization that assists needy children throughout the county.

"The Switchfoot Bro-Am contest combines three of our favorite things: music, surfing, and San Diego," explained Switchfoot drummer Chad Butler, on the Bro-Am website. "For the last two years the local community has united to make a difference in the lives of kids who are in situations they should never have to face. This year the support for the third annual event has been overwhelming and it's exciting that so many people are asking how they can get involved."

Last year, the event brought in 6,000 people, but Switchfoot is expecting many more to come for this outing.

A surf contest will run throughout the day and will have appearances from professionals Tom Curren and Timmy Curran. A free concert will go on afterwards and will feature Switchfoot as well as a number of other artists such as Jason Mraz.

To raise money for Care House, several companies have sponsored the event and vendors will line the beach with merchandise and other items. On May 30, there was a silent auction at the restaurant When in Rome…, which featured an acoustic performance by lead singer Jon Foreman.

The band has described the whole fundraiser as "a yearly event near and dear to Switchfoot's hearts."

"'Bro-Am' is the buzzword in town," wrote the Dove Award-winning group on their website. "A fellow fan, Holly, was at the Bro-Am fundraising auction the other night, and she said she had a great time. The largest bidder gave away around $2,200. Yep."

This year's Bro-Am will run throughout Saturday.
