'System Shock 3' release date: Teaser site and source code confirm upcoming sequel
Gamers and "System Shock" fans had a big surprise this past week. It seems that a sequel to the game was to be unveiled imminently.
Game studio Otherside Entertainment tweeted a teaser site on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The site featured some flickering letters and a timer that is set to Sunday, Dec. 13.
"Pathetic creature of meat and bone… You think you can hack me?" one page of the teaser site says. "Bioshock" series fans would know this as the iconic phrase the antagonist, the A.I. Shodan which "lost its mind," said to its creator who was a hacker.
Well, another "hacker" has discovered the secret of the teaser site. Instead of waiting for the big reveal on Sunday, a member of the RPG Codex forum looked at the web page source code and found this:
By the looks of it, "System Shock" series will definitely have a new installment. That's as much as what can be gathered from the source code though, but more details should come out upon the big reveal.
The teaser site is linked to Otherside Entertainment, whose founder Paul Neurath was part of the now defunct Looking Glass Studios, which created the original "System Shock" game.
Night Dive Studios, owner of the "System Shock" franchise, had previously hinted on the possibility of a "System Shock" sequel during an interview with Jared Newman of Fast Company where it also mentioned that it might partner with another developer for this particular project.
"To really do another game in that series is going to take resources and time and commitment that we don't have, and it's really not our core business," said chief executive Stephen Kick.
Night Dive Studios is also on the road to releasing the remake "System Shock: Enhanced Edition."
