Bishop T.D. Jakes, pastor of one of America’s largest megachurches, addressed issues facing Christian churches in America in a packed University Chapel on the campus of Princeton University on Wednesday evening.

The public event, titled “Preachers, Profits and the Prophetic: The New Face of American Evangelicalism,” was part of a “Conversation” lecture series organized by the Program in African American Studies, according to the Daily Princetonian.

Jakes and Princeton religion professor Cornel West GS ’80 discussed the necessity for dialogue among people of the world. Jakes also addressed questions on spirituality and the Word of God in helping shape his journey to success.

"The tunnels that I dug in the word of God were to heal me and consequently became systems that began to heal a generation," Jakes said, according to the Princetonian.

Jakes and West also discussed the role of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the issue of poverty in America.

Jakes, who expressed appreciation for King’s role in shaping the current generation, said there needs to be an African American voice in the modern world to speak about the government’s relation with the church.

"We need to stop blaming the church because the government doesn't have the nerve to take a stand," said Jakes.
