Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach Koetter Thinks Stanford's Christian McCaffrey Can Do 'Everything as a Running Back'
Since Doug Martin is going to miss the first three games of the season for violating the league's substance abuse policy, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have to add more depth to the running back position. They can always sign a veteran running back on the open market. But since this year's running back class is loaded with talented prospects, the Buccaneers may look to the draft to solve their problems at the position.
Stanford's Christian McCaffrey might still be available when it's the Buccaneers' turn to pick and head coach Dirk Koetter seemed to believe that he could do "everything as a running back."
"I think most teams are probably looking at him as a weapon, but Stanford definitely used him as an every-down back and Stanford is not a spread team. Not last year, but the year before, I think he had over 300 touches. They were using him as an 'I' back and their main running play was power, old-school power. He's shown that he can do that," Koetter said at the annual league meeting, according to ESPN.
"Obviously people are talking highly about him and they should be. His college production is outstanding," he continued.
McCaffrey does have a lot of potential, but Florida State's Dalvin Cook and Louisiana State University's Leonard Fournette should be options as well for the Buccaneers if they are still available. The team has the 19th overall pick in this year's draft.
Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Times has reported that Buccaneers have brought in University of South Florida running back Marlon Mack for a pre-draft visit on Monday. Mack has been projected to land in the third or fourth round of the draft. The team has already checked out University of Toledo's Kareem Hunt and he should also be available in the third or fourth round.
