Target Will No Longer Carry the Amazon Kindle e-Book Reader
Target will stop carrying the Amazon Kindle e-book reader once it runs out of stock, according to a recent report from Dow Jones.
The retailer is reportedly phasing out Amazon and its Kindle branded products. This could also mean that Target will no longer offer the Amazon Kindle Fire, which is arguably the world's second most popular tablet computer.
Target's reasons for phasing out Kindle products have not yet been revealed. However, it seems a bad time to remove the Amazon products, since the company has enjoyed much success with the Kindle line.
Amazon recently reported that the Kindle Fire made up for over half of the Android powered tablets sold. The wildly popular device accounts for 54.4 percent of the total Android market as of the end of last month.
The Kindle Fire has only been available for six months and it has already blown past high-end Android tablets such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab series, which owns 15.4 percent of the market.
Motorola's XOOM line and the ASUS Transformer line together only account for about 14 percent of the Android market.
Amazon offered a cheap alternative to those looking for a tablet.
Apple opened up the tablet market by releasing its iPad back in 2010, but the device was not cheap. However, Apple products seem to sell despite their price tags. The company did not see any real competition until the end of last year, when Amazon launched the lower-priced, lower-end Kindle Fire tablet.
The device retails at just $199, while the cheapest version of the iPad costs around $399.
The Kindle Fire runs a custom version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread, making it unique to the Android market.
It also does not hurt that Amazon is the internet's largest merchant. The company has enjoyed much success by offering the tablet at its online store.
