Teach your Children
Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them. (Deuteronomy 4:9 NIV)
God was talking to the Israelites. He was reminding them not to forget what He'd done for them. And He was telling them to tell their children what they'd seen.
Is there any better way to remember something than to tell it to someone else? If I hear or see something and immediately share it with someone else, I remember it much better than if I don't. The telling and retelling of a story helps to engrave it in my memory. But if I don't tell it for a very long time, I forget. God knows how our minds work (or fail to work!), so He tells us to share what we see and hear of Him with others. It will help us to remember.
Sharing something you've personally witnessed with someone else is also a great testimony for the Lord. The Word is good to share, but when we can back up the written Word with actual experience, it makes the Word come alive in the mind of the person hearing about it. God wants us to share what He's done in our lives with our children. Through our experience, they can learn about Him. And we can use the same type of sharing to witness to others in our family and our friends and co-workers.
Remember what God has done in your life and teach it to your children and to others. You will all be blessed.
