'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Has New Friend, 'Protector' Behind Bars
Amber Portwood has a new life behind bars, and the former "Teen Mom" star reportedly has a devoted fan and "protector" nicknamed Sugarfoot. A source inside the Rockville Correctional Facility where Portwood currently lives opened up about her new friendship with Sugarfoot.
"Amber has made few friends at Indiana's Rockville Correctional Facility, but Sugarfoot certainly has her back. Everywhere Amber goes, Sugarfoot is by her side- she's what they call in prison, a protector, someone who will fight your battles and keep you safe," the source told Radar Online.
Portwood is currently serving a 5-year sentence for drug use after being arrested in December 2011. She attempted to clean the slate by attending in-patient rehab, but was picked up again after she left the facility. Instead of agreeing to finish the rehab program, Portwood told the judge she'd rather be behind bars, which is where the judge next sent her.
Portwood is doing fine in jail, now that she has a friend and protector, according to the insider.
"They have a lot in common- both have young kids and also suffered with substance abuse problems. The pair [appears] to be a good influence on one another, which can only help Amber get her life back on track," it was reported to Radar.
"In my situation, I felt in the program there were a lot of eyes on me," Portwood told ABC News from behind bars, "and it was very uncomfortable. I was not using my anti-psych medication, even. I was very depressed, all alone, all bitter at everyone. I felt like that wasn't the life I wanted to live. I felt like I'd rather do my time and get it over with."
"Being alone, feeling like you're hopeless, you have nothing, feeling like an addict and you're never going to change, even though in your mind, you're working so hard … Every time you get to court it's not good enough," Portwood added.
Portwood's daughter, Leah, is currently in the sole custody of her father, Gary, with whom Portwood has had a volatile, violent relationship.
