Texas A&M Coach Mike Sherman Fired After Bad Season
Texas A&M fired head football coach Mike Sherman this Thursday.
Sherman had three years remaining on his original contract and was even given a one-year extension as recently as last July, but it went to no avail, according to the AP.
The news comes after a disappointing season, despite of a very promising beginning.
The Houston Chronicle reported that the football year began as the “most anticipated season this century with 18 returning starters from a 9-4 team.”
Unfortunately the Aggie season ended after a devastating 27 – 25 loss to the University of Texas a week before Sherman’s termination.
Although not everyone is convinced that Sherman is responsible for the shortcomings of the Aggie season.
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee, who was formally coached by Sherman at Texas A&M, was prompt to share his thoughts online.
"Disappointed of news that Coach Sherman will be released. Was a great football coach and an even better man! A&M has lost a really good one!" he posted on Twitter.
"I find it extremely difficult to point to Sherman for the seasons' shortcomings. He put his team in situations to win every game and at some point players have to make plays. A&M has made some bold long term decisions,” McGee said.
Many other fans, even several Aggies players have tweeted their disappointment and anger with Texas A&M’s decision as well.
However Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin issued a statement of reassurance on Thursday to address such feelings.
"Decisions of this nature are never easy, and I appreciate the patience of Aggies everywhere as we carefully evaluated the current state of our football program and the prospects for the future," Loftin said.
He reassuringly concluded that "Coach Sherman has created a solid foundation for Texas A&M to build upon."
