Texas Executes Man: 'God Has a Plan for Everything,' Man Says Before Dying
The State of Texas executed Jeffrey Demond Williams last night. Williams was found guilty of the murder of 39-year-old Houston police officer Troy Blando while Blando was handcuffing Williams.
Lawyers for Williams repeatedly tried to save their client's life, but the U.S. Supreme Court denied all final appeals and Williams was given a lethal injection an hour later. The murder occurred 14 years ago when Williams was being arrested for car theft; he made it a block away from the crime scene when he was re-arrested. The handcuffs were still on one of his wrists, reports stated.
"Y'all are getting away with murder all the time," Williams said during his final statement. "When I kill one or pop one, y'all want to kill me. God has a plan for everything… I love everyone that loves me, I ain't got no love for anyone that don't love me," he concluded.
The Associated Press reported that Williams briefly lifted his head before taking several deep breaths and then snoring. He was pronounced dead 26 minutes later, becoming the sixth Texas inmate executed in 2013.
"I have no sympathy for him," Ray Hunt, president of the Houston Police Officers Union said. Hunt and several other officers stood outside the building while the execution was carried out. "Continuing to the very end ridiculing the police just shows what kind of thug he is."
"Troy was a great investigator," colleague Jim Woods told the AP. "He had a great wealth of knowledge, was very dedicated. He'd take on the hard cases as well as the easy ones. He loved to go out and chase car thieves. Unfortunately, that was probably his demise."
Williams' attorneys tried to convince a jury that he was incompetent and only shot Blando in self-defense. However, in a different confession, he admitted that he knew Blando was a police officer and shot him anyway. He was later linked to four robberies, another shooting, and an attempted robbery.
