'The Alienist' Release Date, Plot News: Latest Trailer Shows Main Trio At Work

TNT has unveiled the latest trailer for its upcoming psychological thriller drama series, "The Alienist."

According to TV Guide, fans of period pieces and crime dramas will surely be hooked upon watching the newest promo of the series based on Caleb Carr's novel. In the clip, more details are revealed regarding the three main characters of the show, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (to be portrayed by Daniel Brühl), John Moore (to be portrayed by Luke Evans), and Sara Howard (to be portrayed by Dakota Fanning). The entire trailer features a dark and gruesome vibe, full of cadavers and the distinct mood of 1896's New York.

The thriller will follow a psychologist (aka alienist) named Kreizler and newspaper illustrator Moore as they investigate a series of macabre murders of boy prostitutes in the city. Using psychology and early forensic techniques, the two men will dive into the dangerous world of deceit and peril, acquiring powerful enemies in the process. They will be joined by Howard, a secretary who has huge dreams of becoming New York City's first female detective.

Entertainment Weekly previously reported that the cast and crew filmed the series in Budapest, Hungary, with Jakob Verbruggen (Black Mirror, House of Cards) directing the show. He is also one of the executive producers together with Cary Fukunaga (True Detective), Eric Roth (Forrest Gump), and Hossein Amini (Drive). Other co-showrunners are E. Max Frye (Foxcatcher), Steve Golin, Rosalie Swedlin, and Marshall Persinger (Rectify).

In a July interview with Collider, Fanning spoke about filming for the television series. While she said that the set up was unlike her usual experience shooting movies, she was enjoying the challenge.

"I've been working on it since March, and it's been so rewarding and amazing. It's been very different from making a film, just in terms of the time, but at the same time, the work is always just the work, and I'm working with such great people. I'm feeling very inspired by what I'm doing, and I feel like I'm in the best place I could be. It's a nice feeling," Fanning said.

"The Alienist" is set to premiere on Monday, Jan. 22 at 9 p.m. EDT on TNT.
