'The Bachelorette' Finale: Desiree Heartbroken as One Man Walks Away (Spoilers)
"The Bachelorette" Desiree Hartsock narrowed it down to two suitors during the first of a two-part finale, but not by her own doing. One man chose to walk away, leaving Desiree heartbroken and questioning everything.
Desiree recounted the long journey leading to Antigua and spoke fondly of all the three remaining men. She noted that Chris was the first man to tell her he loved her and that Drew was serious about their relationship from the very beginning. Then Desiree admitted that her feelings for Brooks were different from those she felt for Chris and Drew.
Drew had the first date with Desiree, and the two went exploring in Antigua. She told the camera that she could relax and trust that Drew's feelings for her were real and that he would not break her heart. They then spoke about Drew's family and how much they enjoyed meeting Desiree.
"I would get on a knee today and ask her to marry me, but she doesn't know that," Drew told the camera.
The two decided to stay in the fantasy suite after their dinner was rained out; it was clear that both of them wanted to stay in the suite and have some private time away from the cameras. Drew admitted that he was ready to propose at any moment and said that he knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her when she met his family.
During her date with Chris, Desiree said that she would be open to moving to Seattle, which made Chris incredibly happy. The two enjoyed a romantic date on the beach and a dinner where they recounted their history together.
Chris and Desiree also chose to use the fantasy suite and spend more time together, cementing their relationship. He explained that he wanted just to sit outside and watch the stars with her and spend as much time with her as possible.
The drama immediately started when Brooks told his family that the idea of proposing to Desiree at the end of the show made him "uncomfortable." He then spoke with host Chris Harrison about the situation and revealed he didn't know whether he was truly in love with Desiree. It was painful to watch, as Desiree earlier admitted that she would readily accept his proposal if he was to propose any time.
"I'm not going to feel it, even if I give it more time. Whatever it is I need to feel in my heart, I'm not feeling it," Brooks told Harrison. "There's this pain associated with what I'm feeling."
Brooks then met with Desiree, who could immediately tell that something was wrong. He admitted that he wanted to be in love and wanted to be in love with Desiree but he wasn't.
"I really want to be madly in love with you," Brooks said.
"Why now? Why now?" Desiree asked.
"I really always felt like I needed more time," he replied. "I don't feel it…"
"I don't know what to say… I love you… you're the only one I could say that to," Desiree said through tears. "You're breaking my heart."
Finally, the two parted and Brooks returned home, leaving Desiree to deal with her heartbreak and decide whether or not to continue on with Chris or Drew. Her decision will air next week in the climactic season finale.
