'The Banner Saga 3': How First Two Games Impact New Game's Narrative; Players Get an Unlikely Ally

Fans might want to call to mind the decisions they made in the first two "The Banner Saga" games, because they will have drastic effects on how things turn out for them in "The Banner Saga 3."

In an interview with IGN, the developers from Stoic Games spoke in length about giving fans closure and resolution in the trilogy capper.

Stoic admitted that the combat and gameplay in "The Banner Saga 3" is practically the same as they focused on the narrative side and made sure that fans will be satisfied with how things will wrap up.

"The Banner Saga 3" will task players to take on the role of Juno in discovering and stopping The Darkness from taking over the world. As they look for the answers they need to defeat the baddie, they will also have to protect the citizens of Aberrang from being corrupted by the ominous force.

"Particularly with the Juno caravan, the fate of the world is in your hands and you're trying to stop the destruction of everything you know," technical director John Watson explained.

"The variety of outcomes you can obtain in Banner Saga 3 are as dramatically different from each other as you can imagine on a mythological scope and we're really making an effort to put agency in the player's hands. We want to end the story with a satisfying conclusion, whether you get a catastrophic or triumphant ending," he went on to say.

The narrative of "The Banner Saga 3" will be much more appreciated by those who played the first two games because everything they did in these installments will shape the situation of the characters and the worlds in the new game.

Whatever the choices they made in the first and second "The Banner Saga" games, the consequences and result of all these will determine which characters they encounter, who they will work with, which enemies they will tackle, who are still around and who aren't.

As far as gameplay changes go, Stoic, as mentioned above, did not alter much in "The Banner Saga 3" to maintain consistency across all three games, but they did make objects more interactive to make for strategic combat experience.

They will also now allow players to work with the Dredge, who will be playable to some degree in "The Banner Saga 3." Like the players, these creatures are on the run from The Darkness and so it is found best for the two parties to work together.

"The Banner Saga 3" is expected to be released in late 2018.
