'The Bible' Miniseries: 20th Century Fox Nabs Deal for Film Adaptation, 'Son of God'
The producers from the highly successful miniseries, "The Bible," have struck a deal with 20th Century Fox to release a theatrical film version of the show titled "Son of God" featuring a storyline that will detail the life of Jesus with a special focus on his resurrection.
"What a blessing this is! We are thrilled and feel most encouraged to have a big studio like Fox behind us," Roma Downey, co-producer of the project, told The Christian Post. "'Son of God' is a beautiful and powerful movie that sweeps the audience along on an emotional journey. In this movie you get to experience the birth, life and death of Jesus but most importantly you get to experience the resurrection of Jesus. It's a powerful story and it will be very special to be able to see it on the big screen and share it with family and friends."
The movie will take selections from the miniseries along with hours' worth of scenes that were left out for the anticipated two-hour-long film, slated to be released in U.S. movie theaters in 2014.
The deal with the major film studio was made with Mark Burnett and Downey, the couple who executive produced the 10-part miniseries that aired this past spring, which earned three Emmy nominations and garnered an average of 15 million viewers per episode. Furthermore, 20th Century Fox already manages the home video distribution of "The Bible," which has sold over 1 million DVD and Blu-Ray units since its release in April.
"Just on the scripted side, I could spend the next 10 years just distributing the Bible series and the movie. I believe that in the next 15 years more people on the planet will have seen our Bible series that haven't seen it," Burnett said about the recurring and anticipated success of the series, according to deadline.com.
In addition to the couple's spin-off projects, NBC made an announcement in July that they will partner with Burnett and Downey for a regular series, "A.D.: Beyond the Bible," which will focus on the story of Jesus' betrayal and death, and the aftermath that ensues. The project is currently in its early stages of development, however, network executives anticipate the new show will be a major hit.
Burnett, also produces popular shows including "The Voice," "Celebrity Apprentice," "Survivor" among others.
