'The Boss' Movie News: Movie Beats Out 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' at Box Office
Melissa McCarthy's "The Boss" lorded over "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" over the weekend, beating the DC movie by less than $100,000.
"The Boss," which stars McCarthy, Kristen Bell, and Peter Dinklage, earned less than a million from its Thursday night previews, raking in $8 million on Friday, and ending its first week at the box office with $23.5 million. Apart from a poor box-office showing, the movie also didn't fall in the good graces of the critics, only getting an 18 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes and C+ CinemaScore given by the public who paid to watch it.
Despite the poor box-office performance and reviews, if there is one thing "The Boss" can be proud of is that it was able to defeat "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" at the tills as the movie continues to plunge after displaying its might during its opening weekend. On its third weekend, the Zack Snyder helmed movie only made $23.4 million, a 53 percent drop from its ticket sales the previous weekend.
As of this writing, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" has only raked in less than $800 million, short of $200 million to reach Warner Bros. and DC's target of $1 billion for it to be considered a blockbuster. According to Box Office Guru founder Gitesh Pandya as reported by Hitfix, it is unlikely for the film to reach its target figure, and the most that it can make after the movie is pulled out from the theaters worldwide is a little less than $900 million.
Meanwhile, the fact that "The Boss" has toppled "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" at the box-office over the weekend is some sort of consolation for the movie after the critics slammed it, as well. According to The Guardian, "The Boss" oozes with cheap jokes, unpredictable shift tones, and absurdity.
"The Boss" is directed by McCarthy's husband, Paul Heig, who also co-wrote the script along with McCarthy.
