'The Crown' Season 3 Cast News: Peter Morgan Reveals Olivia Colman Was the Only Choice

Replacing the main cast is a priority on "The Crown" as the Netflix show will soon head to production for season 3. Creator Peter Morgan, however, confirmed that they didn't have a hard time finding the next Queen Elizabeth as Olivia Colman was the show's only choice.

Morgan revealed that "The Crown" casting director initially suggested Colman's name to replace Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth in "The Crown" season 3 and 4. When the writer learned of the choice, he admittedly did not want to look for any other actresses anymore.

"She was on a list of one," Morgan stated. "Happily, she said yes, so it was an incredibly short casting process."

"The Crown" and Netflix then announced Colman's casting as the Queen last October. Foy said she's pleased with the choice and the two have since discussed about the turnover and taking on such an iconic figure in history.

Morgan planned on replacing the main stars of "The Crown" every two seasons since the show was first hatched. Production wanted to authentically represent the characters' ages as the show would tackle a decade of stories per season.

Casting announcements for Prince Philip, Princess Margaret and the rest of the key players in the series haven't been announced as of press time. Matt Smith hinted that he might have an idea who will be taking over his role but he still can't say anything about it.

Vanessa Kirby, on the other hand, cried hard for her final scenes as Princess Margaret. She wanted to keep playing the character for the next two seasons since those years marked big challenges for the royal.

"The Crown" season 3 will follow the royals' lives from 1965 to 1975. Issues that will likely be taken up on the show includes Princess Margaret's divorce and Prince Charles' young adult life as the next in line to the throne.

Netflix hasn't given any date for "The Crown" season 3's release on the streaming platform. Given the production's timeline, the show might not air until early 2019.
