Vampire Diaries New TV Spin Off Series Could Be Launched on CW Network

Reports have surfaced The CW is looking into the possibility of a second "Vampire Diaries" spinoff following "The Originals" which is currently filming its third season.

With "Vampire Diaries" having played on The CW for the last six seasons, and its spinoff, "The Originals," about to launch on its third, The CW is said to be considering another show based on the supernatural drama franchise.

"The Vampire Diaries" creator and executive producer, Julie Plec admitted to The Ditigal Spy she wasn't sure the original show could have a spinoff until increasingly more scenes were produced with the Mikaelson siblings at the forefront.

Plec further said a second spinoff would require the right characters to make it work. According to Plec, the success of "The Originals" had more to do with the actors involved (Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and Claire Holt, among others) breathing life into the characters that earned them their own show.

One obstacle the franchise is currently facing has to do with ratings, and with the vampire and supernatural trend slowly winding down since "The Vampire Diaries" hit the air in 2009, The CW has had to contend with ratings below the two million mark, giving rise to speculations the show won't extend beyond the seventh season.

A new spinoff will need not only the right characters played by compelling actors, but potentially hit it off with the genre audience for The CW to consider greenlighting another show based on the original series.

Plec's plate is currently full, with another series, epidemic thriller "Containment" due to premiere next year, and she isn't sure she can cope with four shows all at once, assuming a second spinoff on "The Vampire Diaries" gets an okay from The CW.

Whatever path the TV network will take, supernatural and vampire show fans will have Season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries" and Season 3 of "The Originals" to look forward to when they both open on Oct. 8.
