'The Deuce' Season 2 Renewed: New Season Ordered by HBO

With "The Deuce" being one of HBO's most critically acclaimed drama series today, many wonder what future awaits it after its first season. After keeping quiet about the renewal of the series, HBO finally announced last week that it was giving "The Deuce" a second installment.

In its official statement, the network confirmed that the drama starring Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco would be renewed for a sophomore season and that original writers David Simon and George Pelecanos would be back as the storytellers.

"We are thrilled to continue our creative collaboration with master storytellers David Simon and George Pelecanos," said HBO programming president Casey Bloys in a statement that was dated Sept. 19. "Their unique gift for immersing the audience in their dark and edgy worlds brings a brilliant verisimilitude unlike any other. With the remarkably talented Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Franco leading an exceptional cast, we look forward to delving deeper as this captivating story evolves."

The network also took to Twitter to announce the renewal of the series, saying: "This story is just beginning. #TheDeuce season 2 is coming."

For his part, Simon said in a statement that all the people who were part of the project would like to thank HBO "for the chance to take the narrative where it needs to go." He further explained that although they "knew the theme and purpose of the story," there were some in the entertainment industry who might not want it put out in the open.

Pelecanos also thanked the network, whom he referred to as their "longtime partners," for giving them yet another opportunity to resume telling their story. The filmmaker said they were ready to return to work with their cast and crew.

In the series, Gyllenhaal and Franco play twins who live at Time Square during the 1970s. The series is characterized by its "sharply drawn characters" and a "tapestry of interweaving arcs."

The first season of "The Deuce" airs on HBO every Sunday at 9 p.m. EDT.
