'The Elder Scrolls Online' Latest News: 8.5 Million Copies Sold, Says Director

"The Elder Scrolls Online" has sold 8.5 million copies, according to the game's director.

Based on a report from MMORPG.com, game director Matt Firor confirmed at a press event that the game is sporting 8.5 million players. However, this number is based off units sold and is not just a tally of registered accounts. The population is split "fairly evenly" among all platforms, Firor said. This means the game has grown, selling 1.5 million copies since the announcement last year that the game had 7 million players.

"The Elder Scrolls Online" debuted in 2014 but was negatively received by critics and gamers. However, after continued expansions and updates to the online game, game developer ZeniMax Online Studios has managed to improve the game and turn around the gaming community's opinion.

In other news, Bethesda will also be releasing a new downloadable content (DLC) expansion called "Morrowind" this summer. According to GameRant, the popularity of the original "Morrowind" video game among older gaming fans of the "Elder Scrolls" franchise could drive up sales of the online game even more, if it succeeds in bringing a new group of fans to the fold.

The fan-favorite "The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind" won a lot of "Game of the Year" awards back in 2002. Hence, the announcement of the "Morrowind" DLC expansion for "The Elder Scrolls Online" is expected to draw long-time fans of the franchise to the online video game.

The "Morrowind" DLC expansion will reportedly add a large new zone, featuring familiar locations from the original "The Elder Scrolls 3" video game like Seyda Neen and Vivec City. New enemies, armor, weapons, and encounters will also be featured in the upcoming DLC, as well as the new Warden player class.

To promote the forthcoming "Morrowind" DLC expansion, Bethesda has also recently released a new gameplay trailer.

The "Morrowind" expansion of "The Elder Scrolls Online" is scheduled to launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on June 6.
