'The Girl on the Train' Release Date, Cast and Spoilers: 5 Facts You Need to Know About the Upcoming Film
Universal and Dreamworks can only hope to replicate the same success as the well-loved mystery and thriller story crosses over from print to a motion picture
Paula Hawkins' novel "The Girl on the Train" has already amassed a huge following since its first release back in early 2015, conquering the New York Times best-seller list for 13 consecutive weeks that same year and selling more than 10 million copies worldwide thus far.
Universal and Dreamworks can only hope to replicate the same success as the well-loved mystery and thriller story crosses over from print to a motion picture.
The film, which is due to hit the theaters this coming October 7, stars Emily Blunt as the lead character Rachel Watson, Haley Bennett as Megan Hipwell, Luke Evans as Scott Hipwell, Allison Janney as Officer Riley, and Justin Theroux as Tom Watson. Meanwhile, here are some interesting tidbits about the upcoming film.
The Idea of a Movie Adaptation Came Even Before the Novel was Released
It was a time before the novel was published when producers from Marc Platt Productions and Dreamworks were already convinced amongst themselves that this compelling story is worth turning into film.
"It was eerie, creepy and enticing," Jared LeBoff of Marc Platt Productions said after he got to read a digital copy of the material. "It just added up to a juicy piece of material." And, it didn't take long before the studios secure the rights for the movie.
The Novel's Author Thinks Emily Blunt is Too Pretty for the Role
Hawkins echoed the same sentiment by some critics that Blunt is just "too beautiful" an actress for the lead role. She, however, stressed that the English actress did an extraordinary performance for the film.
"Everybody moans about, 'Oh, she's too beautiful to play Rachel' and she is. But the thing about Rachel, you know the key part of her is her self-loathing and how bad she feels about herself," the author said.
The Film is Likened to Gillian Flynn's 'Gone Girl'
Apart from the word "girl" in both the titles, the novels are narrated by unlikable and unreliable characters, the stories both have a suburbia setting, and a missing woman and a suspected husband in the plot, among others. Hawkins, meanwhile, seem to disagree.
The Lead Character is Not Likeable and That's What Blunt Likes About it
Emily Blunt revealed that while some people think that the lead character was not as "likeable" as most of the usual female protagonists, it was the idea of seeing someone who has a lot of flaws takes the lead role that captivated her about the character. She just wanted to explore that kind of a different persona.
Luke Evans and Haley Bennett Sing Disney Song During Love Scenes
In order to shake off the awkward feeling while filming the nude scenes, Evans shared that they decided to sip some bourbons and coke, and sing "Lion King." But, Bennett clarified that it was, in fact, the song "I'm going to marry Belle" from the upcoming "Beauty and the Beast" film, which also stars Evans.
