'The Good Place' Season 2 Premiere: Reboot Begins Right On Track, Critics Say

"The Good Place" returns for season 2 on NBC this Wednesday with an hour-long premiere. The show gets a reboot following the big revelation from last season that the Good Place is actually the Bad Place or Hell in the after-life.

Rebooting a show might usually spell trouble and repeating scenes could bore viewers. "The Good Place" season 2, however, will not play out similar scenes from season 1.

"The audience knowing more than the characters and waiting for them to catch up could get boring very fast," executive producer and creator Michael Schur told TV Insider. "So the show goes in a bunch of new directions pretty quickly."

Reviews from critics who were able to watch advanced season 2 episodes indicate that "The Good Place" is still right on track. The first four episodes still hold many surprises and laughs and the characters continue to unravel, despite the big revelation last season.

Eleanor (Kristen Bell) might have had her memory completely wiped out in the finale, but the second season premiere will open with her character primed for a mission to find Chidi (William Jackson Harper) base on a note that she left for herself. Chidi, Tahani (Jameela Jamil), and Jason/Jianyu (Manny Jacinto) will also have new challenges as engineered by Michael (Ted Danson), the person responsible for creating this torturous world in the after-life.

Danson told Entertainment Weekly that his character will do plenty of switches in season 2 as the architect of the Good Place. There will be more clowns, much to Eleanor's regret, and there will be new Hawaiian pizza restaurants, as well as scenes on the train.

Danson said "The Good Place" season 2 will be more magical and many of the scenes will play out from his character's perspective. Another big twist could come, given that Michael isn't the most honest and reliable person.

"The Good Place" season 2 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 9:00 p.m. EST for episode 1 and 2. The show will move to its Thursday time schedule on Sept. 28, 8:30 p.m. EST for the rest of the season. There will be 13 episodes in total.
