'The Handmaid's Tale' Season 2 Spoilers: 'Veep' Actress Clea Duvall Joins as Emily's Wife

"The Handmaid's Tale" season 2 adds a new character. "Veep" actress Clea Duvall joins the show as the wife of Emily/Ofglen (Alexis Bledel).

Duvall will play Sylvia on "The Handmaid's Tale" season 2. Her role is a guest appearance for now and there is no word if she'll appear in more than one episode.

Emily mentioned her wife to June/Offred (Elisabeth Moss) in "The Handmaid's Tale" season 1. The two characters secretly got around to discussing the Mayday resistance and their life before the Gilead and Emily revealed to her friend that she's a lesbian who had a wife and son in her former life.

Sylvia had a Canadian passport, thus she and her son were able to escape the Gilead regime. Emily, on the other hand, suffered as a handmaid. She was last seen being taken away in season 1 as the authorities learned that she's part of the resistance.

Her fate remained unknown as the first season concluded. Producers of "The Handmaid's Tale," however, promoted Bledel to series regular in season 2. It boosted speculations that the show will expound on the Colonies or the place where the Gilead banish women like Emily.

"We're not just going to talk about that this season, we're going to go there," star Samara Wiley, who plays Moira, revealed. "We're going to see what's that life and meet those women and see what their day-to-day lives are like."

Meanwhile, Wiley's character escaped for Canada last season. She already found June's husband Luke (O-T Fagbenie). Will she come across Sylvia in "The Handmaid's Tale" season 2?

"The Handmaid's Tale" is currently filming the second season. Hulu gave no specific date on its return on the streaming platform, apart from a 2018 premiere.

The show based on Margaret Atwood's best-selling dystopian novel published in the 1980s won Outstanding Drama Series in the most recent Emmy Awards. The series also stars Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford, Joseph Fiennes as Fred Waterford, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia and Max Minghella as Nick Blaine.
