Every first aid kit should contain high quality oregano oil. According to aromatherapy expert, Dr. Gary Young, Oregano oil is a powerful anti-infectious agent for the respiratory, gastrointestinal, nervous, reproductive, lymphatic and hematological systems. It has broad spectrum action against bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. It is also a general tonic and immune stimulant.
Oregano oil is anti-fungal, anti- bacterial and anti-parasitical. It is a wonderful preventative cure for colds and flus. I know one woman who diffuses oregano oil whenever there are visitors to prevent germ spread in her busy household.
One of the active ingredients in oregano is phenol. High quality oregano contains 60 to 80 % of phenols. Phenol is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antiseptic in general. According to Dr. Kurt Schnaubelt, author of Medical Aromatherapy, The hot phenols of oregano are tempered by the anti-inflammatory sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. He goes on to say that there are many different ingredients and constituents in essential oils which combine synergistically to form the unique essential oil with all its properties.
Dr. Jean Valnet, one of the fathers of modern aromatherapy, described in his classic book, The Practice of Aromatherapy, how researcher Cavel studied essentials oils for their germ-killing properties. Oregano oil proved effective in sterilizing sewage water in a concentration of 1%.
When I was doing tsunami relief work in northern Sumatra, I used 60 drops of pure high quality oregano in a liter of pure water which was used as a treatment for all sorts of skin afflictions. We used this treatment as a poultice for fungal and bacterial infections with excellent results.
In his book, Dr. Valnet provides traditional formulae that have modern application. His formula for an anti-arthritic ointment uses 5 grams of oregano essence and 95 grams of spirit of rosemary. An anti-cellulite formula consists of 20 drops of oregano with 20 grams of lanolin and 40 grams of Vaseline. An anti-lice remedy calls for 15 drops each of oregano, lemongrass, thyme and geranium mixed with 5 grams of wax and 85 grams of Vaseline.
According to Dr. Cass Ingram, one of the leading advocates on the uses of wild oregano oil, other properties of oregano proven by modern research include destruction of all molds and fungi, disintegration of RNA and DNA viruses including the herpes viruses, inhibition of bacterial growth including staph, strep and E. Coli, destruction of the parasite giardia lamblia, destruction of mold spores in the air, halting of the growth and/or destruction of skin fungi, increasing the output of bile, reversing pain and inflammation and improving the detoxification capacities of the liver.
The most important aspect of using oregano is to make sure that it is of the highest quality and certified to be food grade. Much of what is found on the market is not a pure oregano. Its usually either marjoram or thymus. Dr. Cass Ingram says in his book, Lifesaving Cures, Beware of oils made from cheap imitations which are not edible and/or made from Spanish oregano (thymus capitus), orgianum vulgare (marjoram) or Mexican sage. Do not consume these types internally. Dr. Ingram also issues a warning against genetically-engineered oregano.
If you have a cough or cold or if you feel one coming on, one or two drops of oregano oil in a glass of water four times a day is very helpful remedy and can stop the cold from coming on in full. Pure food grade oregano oil can also be taken internally and placed in OO capsules with two to four drops of oregano oil for each capsules. Pure oregano oil must be diluted or it will burn the throat.
Oregano oil can be applied directly or undiluted to the bottom of the feet. Elsewhere the high phenol contact of oregano oil can burn the skin. Oregano can cause a burning sensation on the skin or the delicate mucousal membranes of the mouth, vagina or rectum. It is best to dilute the oregano oil with extra virgin olive oil, almond oil or grapeseed oil before applying it to the skin. Oregano can also be diffused into the air by a cold air diffuser. Heating an essential oil destroys its therapeutic properties.
