'The King of Fighters XIV' Release Details: New Trailer Confirms More Characters, 3-on-3 Team Battle Back, New VS Online Party Battle Mode

On Saturday, Dec. 5, SNK Playmore revealed new details about its upcoming versus fighting game, "The King of Fighters XIV." The announcement includes a new trailer that teases more characters, new multiplayer modes, and more.

Yasuyuki Oda, "The King of Fighters XIV" director, announced via the PlayStation Blog that the latest installment of the game will have one of the largest character rosters ever in the history of the KOF series. The game will have a total of 50 characters.

SNK Playmore previously confirmed the following characters: Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, Chang Koehan, Leona Heidern, and Andy Bogard. Now with the new trailer (below), it has also confirmed the following characters to appear in the game: Billy Kane, Kula Diamond, Ralf Jones, King, and Angel. According to Oda, the KOF community can expect both popular characters to return, as well as new ones to be introduced. These new characters will play into the "The King of Fighters XIV's" new story line.

Oda promises KOF players that the new game has a "brand-new exciting arc" in addition to continuing the Orochi, Nests, and Ash's story arcs, which will all play out in 3D graphics.

But the 2D gameplay remains. Specifically the three-on-three battle system will be making a comeback to "The King of Fighters XIV." New multiplayer modes will also be available, including an online competition called VS Online Party Battle. In this new mode, two teams of three players each battle it out in a fighting game tournament.

Participants of Sony's PlayStation Experience were able to play the game at SNK Playmore's booth during the weekend. There, an in-development version of the game was featured where players got a chance to play as Kyo, Iori, Andy, Chang, Leona, or Kula.

"The King of Fighters XIV" is scheduled to release next year as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
