'The Leftovers' Season 3 Brings Narrative Down Under and Leaves No Dangling Threads

The end may be near as the seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure approaches in the third and final season of HBO's mystery drama series "The Leftovers."

In its upcoming premiere episode titled "The Book of Kevin," Kevin (Justin Theroux) will be returning to his role as chief of police of Miracle, Texas. And although he seems to have moved on from the mysterious circumstances surrounding his resurrection, the upcoming seventh anniversary of the Sudden Departure gives him something new to be concerned about.

The imminent anniversary is coming in two weeks, and many believe that it could usher in another catastrophic event that might just wipe out the rest of humanity.

This will bring Kevin at a crossroads as he attempts to regain some normalcy in his life now that he is no longer being tormented by Patti (Ann Dowd), the leader of the local chapter of the Guilty Remnant.

On the other hand, the upcoming season will also find the Murphy family reeling from the faked disappearance of Evie (Jasmin Savoy Brown), their rebellious teenage daughter, and also from the aftermath of the rogue operation conducted in Miracle by Meg (Liv Tyler), the most radical member of the Guilty Remnant.

Moreover, John (Kevin Carroll) will be confronted by a series of strange events that will defy any logical explanation and will thus shake his hardcore skepticism about miracles, while his wife Erika (Regina King) is at risk of completely crumbling apart after everything that her family has been through.

The series may ultimately bring the narrative to Australia in search of Kevin Garvey Sr. (Scott Glenn), the former chief of police of Mapleton who heard voices in his head, and who is now loose Down Under.

Speaking about the upcoming series finale, co-creator and executive producer Damon Lindelof told Variety that the series will present a close-ended conclusion that will leave no room for any more installments.

"This is it; we left no dangling threads, no to be continued, no spinoff possibilities. We made pretty sure that this was going to be the last season of the show," Lindelof shared. "The audience deserves as satisfying an ending as we can give them. I don't think anyone wants to see a question mark at the end of this."

The final season of "The Leftovers" premieres on Sunday, April 16 at 9 p.m. EDT on HBO.
