According to the same GameSpot report, a sparkly black rock is most likely to contain a type of ore which will also expand the player's bank. Mining these kinds of rocks can be accomplished through bombs. However, if the impact is too much, it might also destroy the gem. So hitting the rock with a sledgehammer is the safer way to go.
Apart from extra items in the storage, extra food supplies and a cooked meal can also be sold to help the player make some money.
