'The Lion King' sequel 'The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar' cast news: Simba to be voiced by Rob Lowe

It was reported that "The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar," TV sequel for the classis Disney animated movie "The Lion King," is expected to air by the end of the year, which has a cast of stellar actors.

According to Comic Book Movie, child actor Max Charles, known for his role in "The Strain" and "American Sniper," will be voicing the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, named Kion. "Parks and Recreation" star Robert Lowe will be taking on the role of Simba. He will be joined by Gabrielle Union, who will be portraying his wife, Nala.

Several actors are expected to reprise their roles, such as James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Ernie Sabella as Pumbaa. Even though Simba's father has already passed, the series will see him helping Simba from beyond.

The additions to the cast consist of Khary Payton as Rafiki and Kevin Schon as Timon. They will be joined by actors such as Joshua Rush as Bunga, Diamond White as Fuli, Atticus Shaffer as Ono and Dusan Brown as Beshte. "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland and Eden Riegel are also expected to take part in the series. However, their roles are still not confirmed.

A teaser of the upcoming series was recently released by Disney Insider. It showed Kion leading a group of animals who refer to themselves as The Lion Guard. It consists of Bunga, Ono, Fuli, and Beshte. Kion is described as more experienced and brave compared to how his father Simba was in "The Lion King." The series will surely explore their relationship.

The series was developed by Ford Riley, who has worked on other series such as "Special Agent Oso." He will also produce the series under the direction of Howy Parkins from "Jake and the Never Land Pirates."

Reports by Slash Film state that the series will be targeted for kids, as it does not present the same mature themes as seen in the films.
