'The Little Mermaid' Movie News: Famous Fairytale to Have Several Live-Action Film Features?

"Once Upon a Time" actress Merritt Dougney is playing Ursula in the live-action feature of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" if the report of Moviepilot is to be believed. The movie is said to be top-billed by Bella Thorne for the titular role and is slated for a 2018 release. However, with no other credible reports that can substantiate the claim of the website, fans of the "Little Mermaid" are thrown off balance about the movie. With many other reported actresses to breathe life to the famous Disney princess, fans now don't know which is which.

Variety reported that "The Royals" star William Moseley has joined Shirley MacLaine and Poppy Drayton in MVP Studios' live-action feature of the most famous mermaid penned in history. This particular adaptation of a Hans Andersen original also includes Loreto Peralta, Diahann Carroll, William Forsythe, and Gina Gershon. This MVP Studios adaptation of the "Little Mermaid" is to be helmed by Chris Bouchard.

In this version of the "Little Mermaid," Moseley plays a reporter who travels with his younger sister (Peralta) to a small Southern town. There the sibling witnesses an enchanting creature (played by Drayton), which they believe to the real "Little Mermaid."

Last year, Variety also reported that actress Chloe Moretz is set to breathe life to Ariel, aka the Little Mermaid, in Universal's live-action adaptation of the famous fairytale. However, just like the other reported versions of "The Little Mermaid," little is known about this upcoming movie, too.

Apart from "The Little Mermaid" allegedly to be top-billed by Bella Thorne, Moviepilot also reported that a standalone film feature of the sea witch Ursula is also in the pipeline and will be treated in the same way "Maleficent" was treated: telling the story from the villain's point of view. Raven Simone of Disney Channel's "That's So Raven" will play the titular role, and Sarah Hyland will allegedly play Ariel.

If all these reports about the different re-telling of Andersen's "The Little Mermaid" are true, viewers can expect a lot of under the sea adventures happening on the big screen in the coming years, much more that Warner Bros. is also coming up with a full-length film feature on Aquaman via the "Aquaman" movie slated for a 2018 release.

"The Little Mermaid" was first published in 1837, and Disney's animated "The Little Mermaid" hit the theaters in 1989.
