'The Mentalist' Season 6 Spoilers: 'New Side' of Lisbon and Jane Relationship Featured in Finale

"The Mentalist" is closing its sixth season with a finale this Sunday entitled "Blue Bird."

As the television series winds down, fans are curious about the promised "romantic" finale and what it could mean for Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney). Fortunately, before season six eve premiered, executive producer Bruno Heller promised "The Mentalist" fans that "a new side of the relationship between Jane Lisbon" would be revealed by the season finale.

"That's an arc we're going to be watching develop through the back end of this season," the EP told Entertainment Weekly back in December. "Now that Red John is gone, both Jane and Lisbon are sort of physically free to wake up and look around and what they see when they wake up from that nightmare is each other. And how that relationship develops and how they sort of start working out who they are to each other is a big part of how the rest of this season unfolds."

This season of "The Mentalist" so far has seen Lisbon growing closer to a new love interest, Agent Pike, while Jane grew increasingly jealous. Furthermore, Lisbon decides to move to Washington, D.C. with Pike after Jane advises she do what makes her happy. However, according to a synopsis for "Blue Bird" this Sunday, Jane will "examine his feelings for [Lisbon] and decide how to proceed," leading fans to believe he chase after her.

In the days leading up to the finale, Heller once more offered fans a taste of what to expect this Sunday.

"With the death of Red John, there's a sense of tying [things] up and certainly this romantic angle is one of them," he told TV Guide.

In a different interview, Heller explained that now that Red John is gone, Jane is forced to finally acknowledge his feelings for Lisbon as well as the rest of his personal life.

"Red John was a convenience for Jane because it meant he didn't have to confront the rest of his life and what he's doing," the EP told The Hollywood Reporter. "After [Red John] goes, for both Lisbon and Jane, there is a palpable sense of, 'What now? Do I really want to continue doing the same thing?'"

Heller added, "It left the two of them without an excuse to decide where that relationship was going. They had always been able to keep it separate. Those questions start bubbling up and the rest of the season was the resolution of those questions."

"The Mentalist" airs on CBS Sunday at 10 p.m. EST.
