'The Mummy' Reboot Movie Release Date Rumors: Considering Making a Female Monster Version

"The Mummy" movie is getting a reboot as part of Universal's plan to launch a series of monster movies based on their old classic films. But it seems like things will be shaken up a bit as reports say that director Alex Kurtzman is considering featuring a female mummy instead of the famous male creatures from the original and its sequels.

According to Science Fiction, changing the gender of the monster from male to female is somewhat a strategy to keep things interesting. Since they are making a reboot, they are thinking that bringing a female Mummy with a unique backstory may just draw moviegoers to the cinema to watch it. But is a different direction for the antagonist really an effective change?

Although, the final decision has not been set yet and Tech Times detailed that it will actually depend on the casting process, Kurtzman said that they have prepared two different back stories already for both male and female monsters. The final decision on which script to use will be determined by whoever gets the part.

Looking back at the history of the Mummy movies, it has always been a male monster. The original one first appeared in 1932 and it was played by Boris Karloff. A 1991 remake followed and this time the monster role was taken over by Arnold Vosloo. "The Mummy," which starred Brendan Fraser, had a sequel titled "The Mummy Returns" wherein it introduced the Scorpion King. In 2008, Rob Cohen directed the next sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" where Jet Li played the role of the monster.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story will be set in the present day. The plot will also be determined once they already have someone casted for the monster role. The reboot film, which will be released in early 2017, is said to be the first in what Universal hopes will be a new blockbuster franchise out from the old monster films. Other projects that the studio is looking on making a remake include classic horror characters like Dracula, Invisible Man, Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein.
