'The Night Shift' Canceled by NBC; Stars Thank Fans on Social Media
NBC has officially canceled "The Night Shift."
Fans of "The Night Shift" will have to look for a different show to get their medical drama fix, as the network has revealed that the series will not have a fifth season.
"We want to thank our amazing creators and executive producers, Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, for their dedication and stellar work; a cast and crew that were second to none; and the city of Albuquerque, N.M., which graciously opened its arms to us," Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment, said in a statement. "For four seasons 'The Night Shift' gave audiences a window to heroic doctors, nurses and all-star medical workers who never hesitated to give their blood, sweat and time to help those most in need."
While Salke's statement did not specifically state why the show was axed, it is likely that it was due to declining ratings. For its fourth season, "The Night Shift" only averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 1.0 rating in the highly coveted 18 to 49 demographic. The number was comparably higher during the show's third season.
Fans are definitely saddened by the news, especially since creator and executive producer Sachs teased more plotlines ahead. In August earlier this year, Sachs revealed to Deadline that "we have a lot of stories to tell." At that point in time, NBC had yet to make a final decision about the future of the series.
The show's stars have already taken to social media to thank long-time fans of "The Night Shift." Eoin Macken, who played Dr. Thomas Charles "TC" Callahan, shared that he is happy "to have brought important social stories and veteran issues to the screen." Jill Flint, who played Dr. Jordan Alexander, thanked the fans for their support.
The season 4 finale of "The Night Shift," which now serves as the series finale, aired on Aug. 31.
