'The Nun' News, Release Date: First Look at 'Conjuring 2' Spinoff Released

A new "Annabelle: Creation" Blu-ray featurette was released over the weekend, featuring a first glimpse of the "Conjuring 2" spinoff, "The Nun." The film is expected to further expand the growing "Conjuring" universe, which started with the hit original film in 2013.

It was earlier this 2016 that it was confirmed that the demonic nun from "The Conjuring 2" would have her own spinoff. Following the announcement, it was confirmed that "The Hollow" director Corin Hardy would direct the film, with "Annabelle" and "Annabelle: Creation" screenwriters James Wan and Gary Dauberman penning the script.

With filming for "The Nun" already in full gear, it's no surprise that a first footage from the horror film is already available this time. The clip is buried in the new "Annabelle: Creation" Blu-ray, offering a first look at the beautiful but creepy abbey in which most of the events in the film is set. The clip shows that the cloister is complete with an interior courtyard overlooked by a figure of the Virgin Mary. It also offers a glimpse of Demian Bichir's character, Father Burke, as well as a photo of a group of nuns with the demon lurking in the shadows.

The clip also features Wan as he talks about the upcoming film, suggesting that he and his co-producers have a great plan for the new spinoff. According to him, "The Nun" will "hook back up and link back into the original 'Conjuring' films."

"The Nun" follows a priest and a young novitiate who is set to take her final vows as they are sent by Rome to probe the death of a young nun in a Romanian abbey. As the two unearth the unholy secrets in the Abbey, Valak, the malevolent nun introduced in "Conjuring 2," begins to haunt them.

"The Nun" will open in theaters on July 13, 2018.
