'The OA' Season 2 Begins Filming January 2018; Will 'Star Trek Discovery' Actor Jason Isaacs Return?

Netflix's sci-fi drama "The OA" begins filming its second season in January 2018. Show creator and star Brit Marling confirmed the start of production for the new season in a social media post.

Marling said on Twitter that there will be eight episodes of "The OA" season 2. She and her staff took the summer and fall to finish the scripts and filming will finally begin after the holiday break.

Netflix renewed "The OA" for season 2 last February, or two months after the show launched on the streaming platform on December 2016. "The OA" did not have any aggressive marketing like other Netflix shows. It popped up on the streaming platform and earned viewership through word of mouth.

Viewers grew fascinated over the storyline of "The OA" in the first season. It followed a group of people who experienced crossing over the afterlife and then coming back to the world they knew. These people also bonded over their shared experience though an unusual circumstance – as captives of a mad man doing his research on the afterlife. Marling's character, Prairie, escapes here captor and returns home under mysterious circumstances.

Meanwhile, another group of people composed of high school kids and a teacher learned of their story through Prairie. She rounded them up so she could teach them complicated dance movements to open a portal that would bring back her friends.

Aside from Marling, "The OA" also stars Emory Cohen, Brandon Meyer, Patrick Gibson, Ian Alexander, Alice Krige, Phyllis Smith and Jason Isaacs, as Hap, the antagonist doing the experiments. It's unclear, however, if Isaacs will be back for season since he's also tied "Star Trek Discovery" for season 2.

Isaacs' character disappeared in the "The OA" season 1 finale. He told The Wrap back in May that he's not sure if he's character will still be written in the next season. He acknowledged that he hasn't worked on a show with such an unusual story as "The OA" before.

"It's so ridiculously imaginative that my head's going to hurt until we start shooting," Isaacs said.

"The OA" season 1 is still streaming on Netflix. The platform hasn't announced the show's return date for season 2.
