'The Orville' News: Fox Renews Sci-Fi Comedy for Season 2

"The Orville" will live to see another season. According to Deadline, Fox has renewed Seth MacFarlane's sci-fi comedy for a second season. The first season is still currently ongoing.

"Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers. He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor," Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said of the creator and star of the comedy.

He further added, "We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can't wait to see where 'The Orville' travels in the second."

The renewal comes as a bit of a surprise because "The Orville" has not exactly been a critic-pleaser. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a rating of 18 percent from critics. On Metacritic, the show has a 36 percent rating, both indicating generally unfavorable reviews. However, audience scores are much higher, with a 93 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.2 rating on Metacritic. Additionally, "The Orville" has been posting good viewership numbers.

"The Orville" has five episodes left in its debut season. There is no word yet on how many episodes season 2 will consist of. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the upcoming episode, titled "Cupid's Dagger."

The synopsis for the next episode states that Ed (MacFarlane) and his crew must arbitrate a peace treaty between two cultures at war. However, the arrival of a familiar face on the ship makes things between Ed and Kelly (Adrianne Palicki) even more strained. Finally, Yaphit (Norm Macdonald) will confess his love for Dr. Finn (Penny Johnson Jerald).

A teaser trailer for the new episode has also been released. It opens with Ed and Kelly in utter shock. It seems that the ship's visitor will damage more than just Ed and Kelly's relationship. He may also ignite a war.

"The Orville" season 1 airs Thursdays, at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
