The People God Chooses
"For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7
Today we have those who consider themselves experts in the field of church growth. But quite honestly, I believe that a number of these "experts" have deviated from the principles for churches as given in Scripture. They will use modern techniques and supposedly proven methods that should result in a large church.
I wonder how the disciples would have fared if they had been subjected to the scrutiny of many of our church-growth experts today? I wonder how many of them would have approved of the people whom Jesus selected to change their world? What if Jesus had submitted the résumés of this ragtag bunch to a modern management group? The response may have been something like this:
Dear Jesus, Thank you for submitting the resumes of the 12 candidates for management positions in your new organization. It is a staff opinion that most of your nominees are lacking in background, education, and vocational aptitude for the type of enterprise you are undertaking. They do not have the team concept. We would recommend that you continue your search for persons of experience and managerial ability and proven capability. . . .
Look at the people whom God chose. Yet look at the results. God did extraordinary things through normal, average peoplepeople like you and me. These were not people who were supernatural in their own abilities; rather, God supernaturally touched them. It was the work of the Holy Spirit through them that enabled them to change their world.
So we can all be encouraged and realize that God can use each of us to impact our culture and our world.
