The PlayStation "4.5" May Be The Real Thing After All
Everything that has come out about a mid-generation console by Sony seem to be based on mere rumors. A report in Eurogamer however claims that it has independently confirmed that the device is in fact the real thing, with prototypes said to be in development at Sony. The report also claims that their sources have been referring to the device as PlayStation 4K rather than PS 4.5.
Another report in Games Radar rounded up reports and rumors in order to paint a better picture of what this mid-generation console will feature.
One major feature that it is expected to have is support for 4K gaming. 4K, otherwise known as Ultra HD, is the current standard in High Definition TV. With better broadcast quality comes the need for some consumers to have similar quality resolution when it comes to gaming. Technology-wise however, the report noted that real 4K gaming may be a while off as the graphics technology associated with it is still very expensive. What the report proposes is 4K support by way of "a wider color range, and high-dynamic range imaging for better contrast throughout the picture being displayed." This is more possible to achieve and much cheaper to implement for consoles.

The mid-generation console will likely have a new and faster processor. Based on current developments with smaller-sized processors, the report speculated that the new console can be equipped with a smaller chipset that has twice the computational power as the PS4.
With smaller internal components, the report also said that the PS 4K may also be the PS4 Slim, which is the sleeker and thinner version of the PS4.
Amidst these reports, Sony has yet to issue any official statement about its plans for its gaming console. The PS4 remains to be an extremely popular console, having sold over 40 million units worldwide since its debut back in 2013.
