'The Promise' Latest News: New Trailer Stars Oscar Isaac, Christian Bale
The new trailer for Terry George's "The Promise" has recently been released, showing the epic story of a love triangle set against the backdrop of the Armenian Genocide.
As seen on the film's trailer, "The Promise" takes place during the Armenian Genocide and tells the story of an Armenian medical student – portrayed by Oscar Isaac – during the last days of the Ottoman Empire. He falls in love with a fellow Armenian (Charlotte Le Bon), who is unfortunately, already involved with a photojournalist (Christian Bale) covering the war for the Associated Press.
According to Coming Soon, the movie begins in 1914, at a time when the Great War looms and the great Ottoman Empire is crumbling. The once vibrant and culturally diverse capital of Constantinople is about to fall into chaos. Michael Boghosian (Isaac) arrives in the capital as a medical student who wants to bring modern medicine back to his ancestral village in Southern Turkey, a place where Turkish Muslims and Armenian Christians have lived together for centuries.
Meanwhile, photojournalist Chris Myers (Christian Bale) has arrived to cover geo-politics, but is also mesmerized by Armenian artist Ana (Le Bon). However, when Michael meets Ana, their shared Armenian heritage sparks an attraction that escalates into a romantic rivalry between the two men.
A love triangle will prove to be the least of their concerns when the Turks join the war and side with the Germans, triggering the Empire's violent treatment against its own ethnic minorities. Despite their personal conflicts, they must all find a way to survive amid the monumental events that have affected their lives.
Aside from Isaac, Bale and Le Bon, the cast of "The Promise" includes Shohreh Aghdashloo, Angela Sarafyan, Daniel Gimenez-Cacho and James Cromwell.
The film was written by George and Robin Swicord, and premiered at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016.
"The Promise" is scheduled for a wider theatrical release on April 21.
