'The Returned' Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: Etienne Didn't Listen to Victor's Warning
Also known as "Les Revenants" in France, "The Returned" continues to explain some of the missing bits that fans have been wanting to know more about in the previous season. In episode 7 of season 2, the backstory of Etienne (Aurélien Recoing), one of the returned, was unveiled.
The episode began with the events that occurred 25 years ago, explaining how Milan (Michaël Abiteboul) is connected to Victor (Swann Nambotin).
In the flashback, Milan took a group of survivors to the woods, with the promise that he will let them know of the reason behind the death of so many people and why it seemed they were chosen to survive.
While Milan spoke of survival and life, the police were at his home where children inside a closet were rescued. Sleeping tablets were also found in the scene — the ones Milan's wife was supposed to give to the kidnapped children.
Later, the entire group committed suicide. Etienne first shot everyone then Milan shot him. With only him and Pierre (Jean-Francois Sivadier) alive, Pierre had to make a decision after he shot Milan dead. However, fear overcame him and he was unable to pull the trigger on himself. Victor saw the commotion, which makes for an interesting twist.
After the flashback, the scene cut back to present day where Frédéric (Matila Malliarakis) talked to Pierre. When Victor was mentioned, Pierre looked uneasy. He is convinced that Victor was the one who pushed Lucho (Vincent Trouilleux) to kill himself.
Pierre knows very well that it isn't just Victor who knows the truth, but there is something deeper than the child's mysterious look. He knows that all who returned from the dead have come back to convince the living that they were responsible for the mass deaths decades back.
By now, the small town should have known that the mysterious boy's predictions shouldn't be taken lightly, but in the episode, the people didn't believe him. Victor tried to convince Etienne that he will be held responsible for the people's deaths if they don't stop building the dam.
To find out who will die next and if Pierre's haunting past will lead him to ignite a second mass suicide in town, watch "The Returned" at 10 p.m. every Saturday on Sundance.
