'The Shadow of the Colossus' Remake Early Reviews: Current-Generation Console Makes This Classic Shine

"The Shadow of the Colossus" remake for the PlayStation 4 were shown around during the Paris Games Week 2017, and the new version did not disappoint. The update, and the hardware in the current Sony console, made this world even more mesmerizing than it already was.

The original "Shadow of the Colossus" showed off everything that the PlayStation 2 can do, stretching the hardware to its limits as Fumito Ueda and Team ICO brought to gamers the amazing scale of the Colossi in the game. The new experience, now on the PlayStation 4, was every bit as unforgettable, as IGN shared in their review.

With the new hardware comes a lot of updates, of course. The textures on the immense giants, the player and the world itself have been reworked to high-definition sharpness, and new physics are also in play. This much was obvious in the way the Wander's tunic waved in the wind and how the hair on the Colossi react with their movements.

As much as the graphics and movements were improved, the feel of the game remained the same, down to the somewhat janky animations of the main character as he clambers on a Colossus. The hitch in the stride of Agro, Wander's horse, also remains intact, according to Euro Gamer.

With that, every small detail has been added on. The fur on the Colossi is denser and has a sheen that shifts with the movement of the giants, depending on how the sun shines on it. All the small touches are even more apparent when running the game on 4K resolution with High Dynamic Range (HDR).

It's all in line with director Ueda's hint that the PS4 remake of the game will remain very faithful to the original, as he mentioned in an earlier interview.

"The Shadow of the Colossus" remake for the PlayStation 4 is set to launch in 2018 and is already available for preorder.
