The latest episode of Season 7 of "The Vampire Diaries" is titled "Mommie Dearest." The name itself suggests that this episode will focus on events around Lily and Julian, whom she has recently introduced to the viewers.

The CW's official synopsis for this episode states: "In order to get through to Lily about Julian's manipulating ways, Stefan and Damon confront their mother with painful memories from their childhood. However, when Lily reveals a dark secret she's been harboring for over 160 years, Stefan and Damon are left questioning everything they've ever known about their family. Determined to prove himself to Lily, Enzo comes face-to-face with Julian and challenges him to a duel, but an unexpected twist threatens to complicate things."
The promo of this episode shows the brothers Stefan and Damon telling their mother that Julian has to be killed. Lily seems to agree and there is talk of some spell. But Lily says that the spell will kill her too.
Enzo wants to get Lily's attention so he intervenes and kills Julian. But the next shot of the promo has Lily falling on the floor and gasping. Who or what is responsible for Lily's state? Will she survive? And what is the dark secret that Lily finally reveals to her sons?
The synopsis states further: "Elsewhere, Matt finds himself in the middle of a deepening mystery involving the residents of Mystic Falls, and Caroline's world is turned upside down when Valerie reveals some life-changing news to her."
In the previous episode, Valerie reveals to Caroline that even though Jo's dead, her twins have been placed under protection and continue to live on inside Caroline. So now, in the future, Caroline will be with Alaric.
Meanwhile, in this episode, Caroline will also find out about Stefan and Valerie's child. This will drive another wedge in their romance. Both these factors will play a part in Stefan and Caroline's separation.
Executive producer Caroline Dries told TVLine that "Valerie is part of the reason, but it's a much bigger, more emotional, legit reason." She adds, "It's beyond petty jealousy or Stefan cheating on Caroline or anything like that.
