'The Walking Dead' Season 8: Actor Says Sasha's Fate Was 'Right'; All-Out War Awaits in Season 8
"The Walking Dead" actor Sonequa Martin-Green thinks her character's fate in the season 7 finale was "right and complete." On the other hand, the last "The Walking Dead" episode of the season is clearly an indication that the highly anticipated all-out war awaits viewers in season 8.
As many fans already know, Sasha (Martin-Green) committed suicide to avoid hurting her loved ones under Negan's (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) control. As the seventh season was coming to an end, Sasha was captured by Negan and the latter promised that she was the best weapon to use against her friends - something that Sasha never wanted to happen.
In an episode round-up and interview on "Talking Dead" after the season 7 finale was shown last Sunday, Martin-Green and showrunner Scott M. Gimple shared some insights with the fans on what happened in the previous episode as well as what to expect in season 8.
Martin-Green discussed Sasha's fate, saying (via The Hollywood Reporter): "It was the perfect culmination of [Sasha's] life. I felt like all of my roads had led to that moment of getting to that place of complete selflessness. It felt perfect. ... Over the course of my life as Sasha, it was progressing beyond that to the point where said I now have a greater purpose that's much bigger than me and that's for the future and I'm going to do it even in death."
Negan was supposed to use Sasha to ambush her Alexandrian friends. While on their way to the Safe-Zone, Sasha was placed in a coffin where she took a cyanide pill from Eugene (Josh McDermitt) that killed her and made her into a walker. When Negan opened the coffin, the now zombified Sasha jumped at the series antagonist but was not able to scratch or bite him.
After the battle between Alexandria and the Saviors, the zombified Sasha was found outside the Safe-Zone where one of her closest friends, Maggie (Lauren Cohan), had to kill her so she would not have to continue living as a walker.
Fans might have foreseen Martin-Green's exit from "The Walking Dead," especially when it was confirmed that she was going to play an important role in the upcoming TV series "Star Trek: Discovery."
On the other hand, there is no secret that the battle in the season 7 finale would lead to the all-out war against Negan and the rest of Saviors. While Gimple did not mention any specific plot detail, according to THR, he teased during the same post-episode round-up: "It's going to be bigger, more intense...this year, same thing. The first four episodes will melt people's minds and break their televisions."
As for the premiere of season 8, reports highly expect that it will happen in fall of this year or sometime in October.
