'The Wolverine' Tops Box Offices With Its Weekend Debut
The newest movie of the "X-Men" series, "The Wolverine," debuted this Friday and topped the weekend box office revenue, though it did not bring in as much as predicted.
The movie featuring the popular mutant Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, brought in 55 million over the weekend, according to MTV.
Though "The Wolverine" grabbed the no. 1 spot, it earned less than predicted. 20th Century Fox had estimated a $60 million debut.
It is the sixth "X-Men" movie to debut at no. 1, proving that audiences are still quite enamored with the adventures of the crime-fighting mutants.
Overall however, "The Wolverine" is doing less well than other "X-Men" movies have done. For example, the 2009 movie which also centered on the character Wolverine, " X-Men Origins: Wolverine," earned $34.4 million on the Friday it opened. That was accomplished without the extra income for 3-D ticket sales.
"The Wolverine" takes place in Japan, and centers around Wolerine's struggle with his own immortality and vulnerability, according to IMBD.com.
Taking second place and the box office was James Wan's horror movie "The Conjuring." The scary movie has only been in theaters for two weekends and it has already brought in $69.1 million, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Coming in at third place in box office earning this weekend was Universal's animated sequel, "Despicable Me 2." The movie brought in $4.8 million on Friday alone, and has made a total of $295.2 million thus far, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"The Wolverine" is rated PG-13 and is now playing at theaters everywhere.
