Third of Women Considering Abortions In Mexico City Choose Life When Offered Help

According to recent reports, more than a third of women seeking an abortion in public institutions in Mexico City have a change of heart and select life for the unborn child rather than move forward with the alternatives offered by the Mexico City government.

Armando Ahued Ortega, Mexico City's secretary of health, revealed that during the five years that abortion has been legal in and subsidized by the city, it has processed 125,000 requests for abortion services. But the secretary of health stated that according to city records only 82,000 abortions have been completed.

That leaves a total of 43,000 women who have changed their minds and opted to grant life to their unborn.

Ortega feels that the women who decide not to have an abortion did so because they became aware of the aid and services that are offered to women seeking abortions such as health services during and after pregnancy and also the option for mothers to give their children up for adoption, according to Mexico's El Informador.

Approximately 40 percent of women who inquire about abortions at government agencies never obtain one, in part because the Mexico City government informs women of the option to give birth at the government's expense. However, the government also subsidizes abortions which can be conducted until the 14th week of pregnancy.

Thousands more babies in Mexico City and in other regions are given the opportunity of life because of the work of the National Pro-Life Committee.

That organization uses on-site mobile units to give ultrasounds to women entering abortion facilities while also offering them shelter and medical care during and after their babies are born.

Since the passage of Mexico City's abortion law five years ago, 17 other Mexican states have passed right to life amendments to their constitutions which prohibits abortion procedures.
