This week marks the anniversary of when the Rev. Richard Mather, the ancestor of notable Puritan leaders in British colonial America, arrived in Boston, Massachusetts.

A native of Lowton, Lancashire, England, Mather had garnered much controversy and was in legal trouble for his preaching and left for America where he was well-received by many churches.

Mather was known for his writings, including his journal account of the journey to Boston, as well as his “summation of principles” that were adopted at the Cambridge Synod of 1648.

Additionally, he was the father of notable Puritan minister and educator Increase Mather, and the grandfather of notable Puritan minister and author Cotton Mather.
