This week in Christian history: Good News Club wins at Supreme Court, SBC revises Baptist Faith and Message
SBC adopts revised Baptist Faith and Message – June 14, 2000
This week marks the anniversary of when the Southern Baptist Convention voted overwhelmingly to adopt the 2000 Baptist Faith and Message, a statement of beliefs that Southern Baptists agree upon.
A revision of the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message, the newly adopted version was updated with the intention of clarifying certain aspects of the earlier edition, and to address more contemporary issues like homosexuality and abortion.
“We have sought to clarify the intention of both previous editions [1925 and 1963] of the Baptist Faith and Message,” said Adrian Rogers, chairman of the Baptist Faith and Message Study Committee, as reported by the Baptist Press at the time.
“We have made the total truthfulness and trustworthiness of the Bible even more explicit. And we point to Jesus Christ as the focus of divine revelation.”
In recent years, the document has garnered a lot of attention over its stated position that “while both men and women are gifted and called for ministry, the office of pastor is limited to men as qualified by Scripture.”
